Itinerary
Day 1: Pangkalan Bun - Kumai Port - Tanjung Harapan
Welcome to Pangkalan Bun, located on the captivating island of Borneo, known as Kalimantan in Indonesia.
Upon your arrival at the airport, our friendly guide will be there to greet you. From there, we'll transfer to the Kumai port, a short 15-20 minute drive, where our exciting adventure begins!
We'll board a traditional wooden boat called klotok and set sail along the famous Sekonyer River, offering enchanting views of the lush surroundings.
If your flight arrives early (before 11.30 AM), you'll have the opportunity to visit the Tanjung Harapan rehabilitation center at 3 o'clock in the afternoon. Here, the national park rangers feed the orangutans, providing you with your first close encounters with these remarkable creatures. Tanjung Harapan, meaning Cape of Hope, is abundant in wetlands, but be sure to apply enough mosquito repellent.
After visiting the Rangers Camp, we'll continue upstream on the boat, keeping an eye out for various animals along the Sekonyer River's banks. It's quite common to spot groups of proboscis monkeys and other primates leaping from one branch to another, and you might even catch glimpses of crocodiles and lizards in the river's shallows.
As the sun sets, we'll moor the boat by the riverbank and spend the night here. Tonight, if you're up for it, we can venture into the jungle to seek out Night Animals like snakes, tarantulas, or even the lucky sight of luminescent mushrooms or Tarsiers.
Meals: Lunch - Dinner
Accommodation: Klotok Boat
Day 2: Pondok Tangguy - Camp Leakey
After a delightful breakfast, we'll head out in time to witness the feeding at Camp Tanggui (9 AM). As you wait in anticipation, you'll notice the treetops beginning to stir, and soon, the orangutans will appear at the feeding platform.
Tanggui was once a release camp for young rehabilitated orangutans, and it continues to provide daily food supplies to prevent them from straying outside the National Park, where they could be at risk from settlers or palm oil plantations.
After observing the orangutans, we'll return to the klotok to continue further up the river. The river's coloration will change, and you'll have the chance to spot crocodiles, large lizards, Gibbons, and more proboscis monkeys along the way.
Our next destination is Camp Leakey, a renowned orangutan research and rehabilitation center established in 1971 by Birutte Galdikas, a student at UCLA Los Angeles University. The name "Camp Leakey" honors her teacher, the Paleoanthropologist Louis Leakey. Over 200 orangutans have been successfully treated and reintroduced to the jungle through this center. However, since 1995, the Indonesian government has prohibited the introduction of more orangutans to this camp, allowing the existing orangutans to adapt to freedom more naturally.
Presently, the camp serves as a research facility, studying orangutan behavior and feeding habits. Our knowledgeable guide will lead us on a short trek through the jungle to search for orangutans and other animals in their natural habitat. At 2 PM, we'll witness the Orangutans' feeding time and also visit the small museum set up by Dr. Birute Galdikas.
After our time at Camp Leakey, weather permitting, we'll dock the boat near a congregation of fireflies and marvel at their luminous display.
