Day 1: Pangkalan Bun - Kumai Port - Tanjung Harapan
Your voyage into the captivating realm of Borneo begins with your arrival at Pangkalan Bun in Kalimantan, Borneo. Standing ready to greet you, your guide awaits at the airport, eager to embark on this journey together. A brief 15-20 minutes' car ride transports you to Kumai Port, where the anticipation of adventure hangs in the air. Your vessel for this journey is a swift speed boat, a promise of the exhilarating experiences that lie ahead.
With meticulous precision, your guide ensures all arrangements are in perfect order. Coordinating with the captain, you'll set forth on a captivating cruise along the renowned Sekonyer River. The first highlight of this expedition is the Tanjung Harapan rehabilitation center, a pivotal place in your journey. Arriving around 3 PM, you'll witness a spellbinding spectacle: the orangutan feeding session overseen by the skilled national park rangers. Here, you'll come face to face with these extraordinary creatures, etching memories that will endure.
Tanjung Harapan, translating to "Cape of Hope," becomes the setting for your first night's stay. Nestled amidst wetlands, the symphony of mosquitoes creates an ambiance that's both unique and enchanting. After your visit to the Rangers Camp, your journey back to the hotel unfolds, providing glimpses of diverse wildlife along the Sekonyer River. Day 2: Pondok Tangguy - Camp Leakey
The day begins with a fulfilling breakfast, setting the stage for an enriching adventure. You'll journey to Camp Tangguy for the morning feeding at 9 AM, an experience that unfolds like a natural symphony. As the treetops sway, the arrival of orangutans to the feeding platform is announced. Tangguy, once a rehabilitation center for young orangutans, plays a crucial role in their well-being, minimizing the risks of encounters with settlers and palm oil plantations. As the orangutans return to the embrace of the forest, your upstream journey resumes, painting the river's canvas with ever-changing hues. Along the way, encounters with crocodiles, Gibbon monkeys, and the iconic proboscis monkeys add depth to your journey.
Your ultimate destination is Camp Leakey, a historic research and rehabilitation center. Founded by Birutte Galdikas in 1971, this center is a treasure trove of insights into orangutan behavior. With your guide's expertise as a compass, you'll delve into the jungle to observe orangutans in their natural habitat. The 2 PM feeding session is a highlight, followed by a visit to the center's small museum. A jungle trek promises thrilling encounters with wild orangutans and the diverse fauna of the forest.
