For a truly immersive experience, you'll spend 1 night camping right in the heart of the jungle, surrounded by the sounds and sights of the Bornean wilderness. This night of camping is a special opportunity to connect deeply with nature.
The other 2 nights of the tour will be spent in the comfort of a private Klotok boat, a traditional wooden vessel. This cozy boat serves as both your transportation along the Sekoyer river and your floating accommodation, offering a comfortable and scenic way to explore the stunning landscapes of Borneo. Sleeping on the Klotok allows you to wake up to the tranquil river, surrounded by lush greenery, creating a soothing atmosphere for a restful night's sleep.
So, while you'll spend 1 night camping under the stars, the remaining nights on the Klotok boat ensure a comfortable and unique experience, as you continue your incredible journey through the beauty and biodiversity of Borneo.
Note for this Trip: Please be aware that the Great Borneo Orangutan Tour is available from April to October to ensure the best camping experience without excessive waterlogging caused by heavy rainfall during the wet season in Indonesia.
Itinerary
Day 1: Pangkalan Bun - Kumai Port - Tanjung Harapan Trekking
Arrive at Pangkalan Bun, located on the captivating island of Borneo, known as Kalimantan to Indonesians. Your guide awaits you at the airport, ready to commence a remarkable journey. A short 15-20-minute car transfer takes us to the Kumai port, where our exciting adventure begins! We step aboard our traditional wooden boat, the klotok. Our guide ensures all is prepared with the crew, setting the stage for our cruise up the Sekonyer River on the klotok.
For early flights (before 11.30 AM), we can reach the Tanjung Harapan rehabilitation center in time for the 3 o’clock afternoon orangutan feeding, offering you a memorable close encounter with these magnificent creatures. The translation of Tanjung Harapan is "Cape of Hope," and this camp situated around wetlands provides an afternoon experience with a higher mosquito presence, so adequate mosquito repellent is essential. After visiting the feeding camp, we'll participate in tree planting before continuing a 1-hour jungle trek. It's a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the endemics of the area, the sounds of the night, the vegetation, and more. Once the camps are assembled, we'll enjoy dinner, and for those interested, there's an option for nighttime hiking to witness the nocturnal fauna alongside your guide.
Meals: Lunch - Dinner
Accommodation: Camping in the jungle
Day 2: Tanjung Harapan Village - Camp Leakey
After tidying up the tent, we continue our trek to the river where the motor canoe will pick us up and take us to the boat. Cruising the river on the motor canoe, we'll enjoy breakfast and freshen up on the boat. After a brief rest, we'll visit the Tanjung Harapan Village located within the national park, providing you a glimpse into the daily activities of the locals.
Our journey proceeds to Camp Leakey, the historical orangutan research and rehabilitation center since 1971, when Birutte Galdikas, a UCLA student, began studying orangutans there. The name "Camp Leakey" honors Birutte's teacher, the Paleoanthropologist Louis Leakey. Over 200 orangutans have been rehabilitated and returned to the jungles thanks to this center. However, since 1995, the Indonesian government has prohibited introducing more orangutans to this camp, allowing them to adapt more to freedom.
Your guide will lead you into the jungle to search for orangutans in their natural habitat, and other animals. At 2:00 PM, you can witness the orangutan feeding time, and explore the small museum created by scientist Dr. Birute Galdikas. If weather and conditions permit, on our way back to the boat, we'll make a short jungle trek to search for wild orangutans and other animals.
This is a unique opportunity to learn from our local guides, some of whom were born in the jungle, about tracking animals or plants, and to hear their life experiences in the jungle. The jungles of Borneo have sustained generations of settlers, providing food, water, medicines, and more. Remember, never consume anything without your guide's recommendation.
Meals: Breakfast - Lunch - Dinner
Accommodation: Klotok Boat
Day 3: Pondok Tanggui Trekking - Proboscis Tour
After a fantastic breakfast, we'll head to Camp Tanggui in time for the 9 AM feeding. As you wait in anticipation, watch the treetops come to life, soon revealing the silhouettes of the orangutans arriving at the feeding platform. Tanggui, a release camp for young rehabilitated orangutans, continues daily feedings to prevent them from straying outside the National Park, where they could be at risk from settlers or palm oil plantations.
After observing the orangutans, we'll return to the klotok and cruise up the Seikonyer River, surrounded by lush vegetation along the riverbank, Nipa Palm, Pandanus, and various trees. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife such as birds, macaques, proboscis monkeys, and orangutans. In the afternoon, weather permitting, the boat will dock near a congregation of fireflies, offering a mesmerizing display of luminescence.
