Open Trip Borneo Orangutan Adventure (3D/2N)
Immerse yourself in the authentic wilds of Borneo's jungles with this sustainable and group expedition that spans two nights in Tanjung Puting National Park. Aboard a traditional wooden boat called a klotok, and accompanied by a local crew and your guide, you'll explore the riverside wildlife along the Sekoyer River.
Within this biosphere reserve, you'll witness orangutans in their natural habitat, observe endemic Bornean proboscis monkeys, macaques, gibbons, hornbills, wild boars, and with luck, catch glimpses of crocodiles near your boat. Moreover, you'll be experiencing this adventure sustainably, as our boats are all refurbished following ecological guidelines, avoiding plastics and palm oil in meals.
Let the adventure begin!
During the peak season months in Tanjung Puting National Park, there are many more tourist boats navigating the river. We strongly recommend choosing a shared boat option during this busy period, as it's a much more environmentally respectful choice. "Share the trip / Save the river" is the motto we embrace, promoting ecologically sound and sustainable travel during the peak season months, and also, more budget-friendly!
Depending on your travel dates, you can share the experience with fellow travelers (small groups of up to 10 people), helping to reduce the number of boats on the river, thereby minimizing pollution and waste. Despite being a group of strangers, you are all on that boat for a common reason — the love for orangutans and nature! These trips always create a wonderful atmosphere, making it undoubtedly a unique experience.
Itinerary
Day 1: Pangkalan Bun - Kumai Port - Tanjung Harapan
Arrive on the captivating island of Borneo, known as Kalimantan to Indonesians, at Pangkalan Bun. Your guide awaits at the airport. A short 15-20-minute car transfer takes us to Kumai port, marking the start of an incredible adventure. Step onto our traditional wooden klotok boat and meet the crew for a smooth cruise along the famous Sekonyer River.
For early flights (before 11.30 AM), we can reach the Tanjung Harapan rehabilitation center by 3 o'clock in the afternoon. Here, national park rangers feed the orangutans, offering your initial up-close encounters with these fascinating creatures. Despite its mosquito-prone wetlands, the afternoon visit is a must, as "Tanjung Harapan" translates to Cape of Hope.
After visiting the Rangers Camp, we'll continue upstream, keeping an eye out for animals along the riverbanks. The afternoon presents the chance to spot proboscis monkeys and other monkeys amidst the treetops, and perhaps even crocodiles and lizards in the river shallows. As the sun sets, the boat will anchor on the river's edge for the night. If you're up for it, a jungle walk awaits, searching for Night Animals like Snakes, Tarantulas, and, if fortunate, luminescent mushrooms or Tarsiers.
Shared Klotok Note: The shared klotok will be ready by 10.30 AM and will depart at 12.00 PM sharp. If you arrive before 12 PM, you can explore the port area or wait for fellow travelers on the boat. Please note that the guide may not be available during this waiting time. All participants should arrive at Pangkalanbun Airport no later than 11.00 AM. If you're arriving late, a speedboat transfer to the klotok is available at an additional cost.
Meals: Lunch - Dinner
Accommodation: Klotok Boat
Day 2: Pondok Tangguy - Camp Leakey
Following a delightful breakfast, we'll journey to Camp Tanggui for the 9 AM orangutan feeding. Observe the orangutans' graceful arrival at the feeding platform as they navigate through the treetops. Tanggui, once a haven for young rehabilitated orangutans, continues to provide sustenance, preventing them from venturing into unsafe territories.
Returning to the klotok after the feeding, we'll venture further upstream, where the river's hues shift as you keep an eye out for crocodiles, large lizards, Gibbons, and proboscis monkeys. Upon reaching Camp Leakey, a revered center for orangutan research and rehabilitation, you'll gain insights into decades of conservation efforts. Founded by Birutte Galdikas in 1971, the camp has been instrumental in reintroducing orangutans to the wild. While new introductions have been restricted since 1995, the camp remains integral to comprehending orangutan behavior.Accompanied by your guide, explore the jungle's heart in search of orangutans and other fauna. At 2 PM, observe the Orangutans' feeding and visit a museum curated by Dr. Birute Galdikas. Weather permitting, an invigorating jungle trek awaits, led by local guides deeply attuned to the forest. As daylight wanes, be enchanted by the glow of fireflies near the boat.
