Itinerary
Day 1: Pangkalan Bun - Kumai Port - Tanjung Harapan
Your journey begins in Pangkalan Bun, an alluring gateway to the captivating island of Borneo, known as Kalimantan. As you step off the plane, a friendly guide will be waiting to extend a warm welcome. A short 15-20 minute car ride will swiftly transport you to the Kumai Port, where an exciting adventure eagerly awaits. Here, you'll embark on a unique voyage aboard our traditional wooden boat, affectionately called a klotok. With meticulous arrangements ensured by our guide, your journey unfolds along the iconic Sekonyer River.
For those arriving on early flights (prior to 11:30 AM), a remarkable opportunity beckons – a chance to reach the Tanjung Harapan rehabilitation center in time for the 3 PM orangutan feeding session. This intimate encounter presents your first up-close introduction to these magnificent creatures. Named "Cape of Hope," Tanjung Harapan is enveloped by wetlands, and afternoon visits advise the precaution of ample mosquito repellent.
Following this captivating orangutan rendezvous, our journey takes us upstream aboard the klotok. As we navigate the Sekonyer River's environs, keep a watchful eye for a diverse range of wildlife. Proboscis monkeys, macaques gracing treetops, and even the occasional crocodile or riverbank lizard may grace our path. As the sun gracefully dips, our boat finds its tranquil anchorage for the night. For the intrepid spirits, an optional jungle walk awaits – a chance to seek elusive nocturnal creatures such as snakes, tarantulas, luminescent mushrooms, and tarsiers.

Day 2: Pondok Tanggui - Camp Leakey
Start your day on a delightful note with a scrumptious breakfast that prepares you for the exciting experiences ahead. The morning unfolds with a visit to Camp Tanggui precisely at 9 AM, right in time for the orangutan feeding session. As the treetops rustle and sway, watch in awe as orangutans gracefully make their way to the feeding platform. Tanggui, a sanctuary for rehabilitated young orangutans, diligently ensures their nutritional needs are met, preventing them from venturing beyond the protective bounds of the National Park. This strategic feeding regime significantly reduces the chances of interactions with settlers or venturing into palm oil plantations.
With the orangutans satisfied, we continue our journey upstream aboard the klotok. Along the river's tranquil flow, the scenery shifts, revealing glimpses of the vibrant ecosystem. Keep a keen lookout, as crocodiles, large lizards, Gibbons, and the distinctive proboscis monkeys may reveal themselves. Our voyage culminates at Camp Leakey, a cornerstone of orangutan research and rehabilitation since its establishment in 1971. This pivotal center has played a vital role in orangutan conservation efforts. Your exploration of the jungle in this area offers a remarkable opportunity to gain insights into orangutan behavior.
The clock strikes 2 PM, signaling the commencement of another feeding session, offering the chance to observe these majestic creatures up close. A small museum dedicated to orangutan studies awaits your exploration. Weather permitting, the afternoon presents the option of a short jungle trek back to the boat. This provides additional opportunities to spot wild orangutans and other captivating fauna. Your local guides, many of whom were born and raised in these very jungles, are an invaluable source of knowledge, sharing their expertise and tales of life in this pristine environment.
As evening descends, the klotok may find its mooring near a mesmerizing congregation of fireflies, transforming the night into a luminous spectacle, a fitting finale to another extraordinary day.
